Surin Beach

UpscaleSwimmingSunsets

Tucked along Phuket's west coast, Surin Beach is a compact, good-looking cove of pale sand framed by casuarina trees and a backdrop of low green hills. It earned its old nickname, Millionaire's Mile, from the luxury villas and smart hotels that cluster nearby, and it still carries that polished, unhurried air today.

The swimming here is part of the draw. In calm season the water turns a clear turquoise that invites long, lazy dips, while the gently shelving sand makes it comfortable for a confident paddle. It feels more refined and less frenetic than some of the island's bigger beaches, which is exactly its charm.

Come late afternoon, Surin reveals its best trick. The west-facing sand catches the sun as it drops towards the Andaman, and the whole cove glows. It is an easy place to settle in for an evening swim, a stroll and a sunset that lingers.

Highlights

  • Pale, soft sand in a sheltered cove
  • Clear turquoise swims in calm season
  • West-facing sunsets over the Andaman
  • Upscale, refined beach atmosphere
  • Shaded casuarina trees along the shore
  • Quieter and more relaxed than larger beaches

Getting there

Surin sits on Phuket's west coast, easily linked by road to its beach neighbours and to Phuket Town further inland. It is a short hop from the Bang Tao and Kamala areas, with the coastal road threading between them. Having your own rented scooter or car makes the run simple and flexible, letting you arrive early for a swim or stay on for the sunset without watching the clock. From Phuket Town, the route heads west across the island before joining the coast.

Best time to visit

Visit in the dry season, roughly November to April, for calm, swimmable water and reliably clear skies. Any day, the late afternoon is the standout for golden light and an unbeatable sunset.

Good to know

  • During the monsoon months the surf and currents can pick up; watch for red flags and avoid swimming when they are flying.
  • Shade is limited beyond the tree line, so bring a hat, sunscreen and water for a longer beach day.
  • Sun loungers and beach service can be restricted by regulation here, so be prepared to bring your own mat or towel.
  • Footing can be uneven near the rocks at each end of the cove, so reef-safe shoes are handy for exploring.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings and take valuables with you when you head into the water.

Frequently asked

Is Surin Beach good for swimming?+

Yes, especially in the dry season when the water is calm and clear. The sand shelves gently, but during the monsoon currents can strengthen, so always heed the warning flags.

Why is Surin called Millionaire's Mile?+

The nickname comes from the cluster of luxury villas and upscale hotels around the cove, which gave the area a reputation for glamour and high-end living.

Can you watch the sunset at Surin Beach?+

Absolutely. The cove faces west over the Andaman Sea, making it one of the loveliest spots on this coast to watch the sun go down.

Nearby: Surin is well placed for exploring the nearby Bang Tao and Kamala beaches, along with the dining and shops around Cherngtalay and Boat Avenue just inland.
