Karon Beach
Karon Beach is one of Phuket's longest stretches of sand, and one of its easiest to love. The squeaky white sand here is famously fine — it actually squeaks underfoot on a dry day — and there is simply room to breathe, with space to spread a towel well away from anyone else even in high season.
Set on the south-west coast between busy Patong and pretty Kata, Karon strikes a happy middle ground. It is lively enough for good food and a sundowner, yet calmer and more relaxed than its neighbours, which makes it a firm favourite with families and anyone after a slower pace.
The wide, open aspect faces west, so this is prime sunset territory. Backed by a grassy strip and a low-key promenade rather than a wall of high-rises, Karon keeps a breezy, uncluttered feel that suits long, lazy beach days.
Highlights
- Long, wide stretch of squeaky white sand
- Calmer and roomier than nearby Patong
- West-facing for glorious sunsets
- Family-friendly with space to spread out
- Relaxed promenade with food and cafes
- Easy day-trips to Kata and Patong
Getting there
Karon sits on the south-west coast, an easy run by road from the other west-coast beaches and from Phuket Town. Having your own rented scooter or car makes it especially simple — you can drop down from Patong, drift up from Kata, or cut across the island from town whenever the mood takes you, and parking near the beach is generally straightforward. The coast road threads the headlands between the bays, so it is hard to get lost.
Best time to visit
The dry season, roughly November to April, brings the calmest seas and clearest skies; come for late afternoon to catch the sunset, and arrive earlier in the day to claim a quiet patch of sand.
Good to know
- The sea can develop a strong shore-break and rip currents in the monsoon months — watch for red flags and don't swim past them
- Shade is limited on the open sand, so bring a hat, water and sunscreen, or hire a sun lounger and umbrella
- It's a long beach: pick an access point near the cafes and shops if you want food and facilities close at hand
- Evenings around the promenade are relaxed, with casual restaurants and a small night-market feel in places
- Respect the beach by taking litter with you; glass and open fires are best avoided
Frequently asked
Is Karon Beach good for families?+
Yes. Its length and width mean there's plenty of space for children to play, the vibe is calmer than Patong, and there are easygoing restaurants and shops nearby. Just keep an eye on sea conditions, as the surf can pick up in the monsoon season.
How is Karon different from Patong and Kata?+
Karon is longer and more spread out than both, with a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere than party-focused Patong, while still offering more amenities and open space than the smaller, prettier Kata bay just to the south.
Can you swim at Karon Beach?+
In the calm dry season it's lovely for swimming. During the monsoon months the shore-break and rip currents can be strong, so always check the flags and stay within the safe, patrolled area.
